Griffin was born in Oklahoma on March 16, 1989, to Tommy Griffin, a head coach, and Gail Griffin.

The NBA player played under his father and won four high school state titles. He, alongside his brother, was homeschooled by his mother right until high school.

The 31-year-old has an older brother named Taylor Griffin, who also played in the NBA and was an overall 48th pick.
